Arcane Lore: Firemouth and Fire Eye

Image
With an appearance of warm weather, I bring you a fire themed spell and a magic item that will help keep things toasty. These originally appeared in Dragon Magazine #123 in Arcane Lore by Harold Dolan. Fire Mouth 3rd level evocation (ritual) Casting Time: 1 minute Range: 30 feet Components: V, S, M (a drop of oil, a pinch of sulfur, and one tooth or scale from a red dragon) Duration: Until dispelled When this spell is cast, an object is empowered with an enchanted mouth which suddenly appears and breathes fire when a specific condition is met. When triggered, a thin sheet of flames shoots forth. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 6d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren’t being worn or carried. If the object you chose has a mouth or something that looks like a mouth (for example: the mouth of a statue) the ma...

Bazaar of the Bizarre: Rings that Do Weird Things

Image
Dragon Magazine #117 was a good one for content for me to work with. In addition to  By Magic Masked , there is also a collection of reader submitted magical rings. I converted a bunch of them over to 5e rules, as well as updating a collection of magical rings from Dragon Magazine #82 that I had previously converted and posted here. I combined the two into my newest DMs Guild Pay What You Want offering, Bazaar of the Bizarre: Rings that Do Weird Things . Twenty-one magical rings to add to your treasure troves! Many thanks to all who have downloaded my two previous collections. In case you missed them, here they are again: Airs of Ages Past  Nine Magical Harps from the Forgotten Realms By Magic Masked  Nine Magical Masks from the Forgotten Realms

Airs of Ages Past

I'm pleased to announce I've jumped into the DMs Guild and have uploaded my first Pay What You Want product, Airs of Ages Past . An article that originally appeared in Dragon Magazine #115, and written by Ed Greenwood, it details nine magical harps from the Forgotten Realms.

Variant for charged magic items "magic focusing"

Image
Wanting to take a break from the races of Eska (even though I only have the warforged left), I've been reading through old issues of Dragon Magazine for things to convert to 5e. While I've found plenty of cool articles and short fiction to read, (not to mention Snarf Quest and Wormy), there has been a lack of things that would port well into 5th Edition. Then I was reading issue #111. While I've barely got into the issue, the first article really caught my eye. Good Stuff, For a Spell. Magic focusing, a new dimension for possessions , by John M. Maxstadt. It provides a variant idea for powering charged magic items such as wands and staffs. The old school 81 charge wand of fireballs, for example, never struck my fancy. Players either hoarded charges and mostly forgot about them, or used them at every opportunity, blasting everything until all charges were gone. I'm not really a fan of 5th Edition's 7 charges that regenerate, either. I'm not really ...

Wand of Mirrors

Image
The wand of mirrors originally appeared in Dragon Magazine #102 in an article "Nine Wands of Wonder" by Ed Greenwood.  I changed the name from wand of magical mirrors, and edited down the language.  I always feel that these 1st Edition AD&D  items were too wordy. Wand of Mirrors Source Rare magical wand These wands were made by the archmage Glendar, who, though good and noble in life, became a lich, and was later destroyed. The knowledge of their making is now lost. Perhaps twenty were made, and most survive in the possession of powerful mages, or in treasure, caches. Activation of this wand creates an opaque, silvery, and reflective circular shield of force. This shield appears wherever the wand is pointing, 10’ distant from the wielder of the wand, facing outward. Its surface will reflect images (including gaze attacks) like a mirror; the wand wielder can look through the mirror as though it was a window without suffering any harm from such attacks. ...

Hammer of Penetration

Image
The final item that I will be doing out of Dragon Magazine #99's Treasure Trove II is the Hammer of Penetration by John Uustal. Updated up the 1e AD&D speech and and based the structural damage capabilities on the earth elemental's "siege monster" ability. Hammer of Penetration Rare magical weapon This is a large-headed light hammer with a 2’ long handle. The hammer’s head slopes down to a point on one side, and the hammer is not balanced for throwing. The hammer of penetration may be used one-handed in combat, and it does double normal hammer damage (2d4), plus a +3 bonus to hit and damage. When used two-handed on stone walls or wooden doors up to 2’ thick, the hammer does 4d4 damage. PDF now available for download!

Bow of Doubling

Image
Next item from Dragon Magazine #99's Treasure Trove II is the Bow of Doubling, originally by Stephen Martin. I have updated this entry and included it in my DMs Guild Pay What You Want entry, Bazaar of the Bizarre: Archer's Best Friend .

Stone of Mysterious Sounds

Image
The Stone of Mysterious Sounds is another creation from Dragon Magazine #99's Treasure Trove II.  It is originally by Nick Kopsinis. It was a pretty easy conversion.  It had a minimum strength to make it stick when thrown, and required a "to hit" roll, but I just simplified it to a single Strength check.   I added the bit about wild sorcerers, inspired by the 2nd Edition AD&D's wild mage having a 50% chance to control wands of wonder and other random magic items.  It's something I think I'm going to add as a class ability.  I think 50% chance to control is a bit much, so I built off of the existing mechanic of the spell attack bonus to expand the range of the die roll and give a couple options to choose from. Stone of Mysterious Sounds Uncommon wondrous item This stone appears to be similar to any other magical stone, though it is malleable and can be easily grasped and reshaped by a human hand. The stone cannot be pulled apart in...

The Final Enemy, part 1

Image
Time to start the final chapter of the Saltmarsh series of adventures, U3 The Final Enemy.  With the knowledge that the sahuagin were gathering in force practically on their doorstep, the council in Saltmarsh has hired the party yet again, this time to do a reconnaissance in force to the sahuagin lair.   Previous sessions can be found here . Our party consists of 4 members.  Each of my sons is playing two characters, who are 4th level.  We've used some backgrounds and subclasses from around the blogosphere, and I'll be linking them... Henk .  Half orc  raider  barbarian with the  duelist  background. Garret Tealeaf .  Lightfoot halfling  con artist  rouge with the criminal background. Faen Firegem .  Half elf  pyromancer   alchemist  with the  tinkerer  background. Ander Highhill .  Stout halfling  water domain  cleric with the  pilgrim  background. T...

Hand of Remote Action

Image
This next item from Dragon Magazine #99's Treasure Trove II is Ed Greenwood's Hand of Remote Action.  I nerfed it a bit from the Dragon Magazine write up, since it allowed attacks, choosing instead to copy over the effects of the mage hand cantrip. Hand of Remote Action Uncommon wondrous item This unusual creation is actually two devices: a gauntlet of steel which will change size to fit the hand of any wearer (halfling through human), and a “hand” of solid steel which is identical to the gauntlet in size and appearance. The two items are magically linked, so that the hand can be controlled like a mage hand , with a range of 30 feet. You can use your action to control the hand . You can use the hand to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial. You can move the hand up to 30 feet each time you use it. The hand can’t attack, activate magic items, or carry ...

Dust of Forgetfulness

Image
Next item from Dragon Magazine #99's Treasure Trove II is the Dust of Forgetfulness, originally by Richard Webb. Dust of Forgetfulness Wondrous item, uncommon Found in a small packet, this powder resembles very fine sand. There is enough of it for one use. When you use an action to throw the dust at a character or other living creature, the dust the victim must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or forget everything that has happened to him in the last hour (including having the dust tossed upon him). Enemies encountered during that time will be forgotten, paths explored will look unfamiliar, and newly made friends will be seen with suspicion. If a character’s immediate surroundings are similar to those the character was in an hour before, the character won’t even be aware of the difference without close examination (if any differences in environment exist). After one week, the lost memories will be restored, and no experience will be lost. Player characters, if sprinkle...

Bracers of Deflection

Image
Here's another item from Dragon Magazine issue #99's Treasure Trove II.  Originally by Michael Persinger, I changed it up a bit from his write up.  His version allowed a parry attempt that gave a -4 to your AC.  I based it off of the Battle Master parry maneuver, giving it the same d8 as the superiority die, but only giving it 3 uses per long rest, as opposed to the 4 per short or long rest that a Battle Master gets. Bracers of Deflection Bracers by Alyssa Ravenwood Wondrous item, very rare, requires attunement While you wear these bracers, you have a +3 bonus to your AC while you wear no armor and use no shield. When another creature damages you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction and reduce the damage by the number you roll on a d8 + your Dexterity modifier.  You can use this power up to three times per long rest.
